Kaleta, Dances of Fear is an outreach project for youth (ages 6 to 20 years old). It was first performed in 2021-2022 by choreographer Betty Tchomanga's association (2021-2024) in partnership with Le Quartz National Stage in Brest.
“Kaleta is a Beninese tradition imported from Brazil in the mid-19th century by former slaves returning to their homeland.
This tradition, primarily for children and youth, is a blend of carnival, Halloween and mask dances.
We will work together with young residents of Brest ages 6 to 20 years old to create Dances of Fear, drawing on Kaleta as a source for our collective imagination.
After several workshops on rhythm, song, costumes and transgression, a group of children, middle-schoolers and highschoolers will burst onto the scenes of the DansFabrik Festival, sharing the voices and dances they carry.”
